Mega raffle for national media campaign to support vaping

A national media campaign to support vaping will kick off on September 1 to coincide with the 12.5 per cent tobacco excise increase.

The Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association charity (ATHRA) will promote vaping in an effort to encourage smokers to make the switch as a far safer and cheaper option.

However ATHRA is asking for our support to make sure the campaign is successful.

Vape vendors from around Australia have donated more than $26,000 of vape gear, liquids and vouchers for a mega raffle to help raise money for ATHRA.  Tickets are on sale until 6pm on Wednesday September 5, for as little as  $3. Winners will be drawn on September 8.

Head to the Aussie Vape Vendors site to see the full list of prizes and grab your tickets now.

As for the media campaign on September 1, that will involve:

  • Social media activity
  • Media releases
  • Opinion pieces
  • Radio, TV interviews
  • Other activities – depending on budget

WHO IS ATHRA

ATHRA is a registered not-for-profit charity, with unpaid directors. All money received is used to achieve their key goals of raising awareness of vaping and educating the public and health professionals about vaping and other ways to reduce the harm from smoking.

ATHRA is managed by the Board of Directors, which consists of four independent medical practitioners and one consumer representative. None of the directors have ever had any financial or commercial relationship with any electronic cigarette or tobacco company.

Dr Catherine Silsbury

As a specialist in Addiction Medicine, Catherine is deeply concerned that more than 80% of her patients smoke tobacco, and that this rate has not reduced over the 25 years that she has worked in Addiction Medicine, despite the Australian national smoking rate having fallen from around 30% to 16% over that time.

Stephen is a semi-retired mental health nurse. Over the course of his career, he published over 60 peer-reviewed articles, attracted over $6 million in research funding and smoked over 200,000 cigarettes. He tried to quit many times using most available methods. Some attempts were successful for weeks or months but inevitably something would trigger the desire for a cigarette and he quickly relapsed back to his 20-a-day habit.
